A letter from Wiltshire's Lib Dem Euro-MP Graham Watson

Mon 17th Nov 2008

The EU is frequently lambasted in the British press for not having its accounts in order. This criticism is partially unfair, since 80% of EU funds are spent in and by the member states and it is in this area that the European Court of Auditors has not been satisfied. It came as a relief, therefore, that on Monday the auditors signed off the EU's 2007 accounts, for the first time in many years. Of course they identified areas where improvements are still needed, especially in agricultural spending; but the overall opinion was an unqualified OK.

Quote of the Week

"This is our moment. This is our time - to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American Dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth - that out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope, and where we are met with cynicism, and doubt, and those who tell us that we can't, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people: Yes We Can."

Barack Obama, the next President of the USA

Acceptance speech - 5 November 2008
